Maria de Lourdes Sobrino is Founder and CEO of Lulu’s Dessert Corporation established in 1982. Lulu’s Dessert is recognized by Hispanic Business Magazine as one of the top 500 Hispanic businesses in the United States. As said Jim Hopkins of USA Today, she is “the queen of ready to eat dessert gelatin and an important power in the community of Hispanic entrepreneurs.”
Ms. Sobrino was born and educated in Mexico City. She started as an entrepreneur in the tourism industry by organizing conventions. That business grew so fast that he decided to open a branch in the city of Los Angeles.
One day looked for ready to eat gelatin in supermarkets in California and did not find it, motivating the idea of starting a new business based on recipes from her mother. In launching the gelatin ready to eat in American supermarkets, she revolutionized the industry with an initial production of 300 cups of gelatin a day to 50 million a year. Lulu’s Dessert has surpassed many obstacles to become known as one of the leading companies in this industry.
Due to their efforts and dedication to her company Lulu’s Dessert, and by setting an example in the community, Ms. Sobrino has been recognized by various corporations, government and the press in general. California First Lady Maria Shriver invited Ms. Sobrino to participate in “2009 Women’s Conference” where Ms. Sobrino discussed “How to Start and Grow Your Own Business in this Economy.” The conference was heard by 14, 000 women across the state. Recently published his first book “Thriving Latina Entrepreneurs in America”. The aim of this book is to share her story and that of other women entrepreneurs as well as providing information on the importance of Hispanic women in the economy and their secrets to achieve success. She is a current chancellor of the Foundation of Rancho Santiago Community College in Santa Ana; Nacional Financiera in Los Angeles (NAFIN) and the board of NAWBO-LA, Latina Style Magazine in Washington DC as well as President of California Leaders Femme D’Amerique, among others.
