THE MUSIC BEFORE THE REVOLUTION OF 1910

Jose Adan Perez (Baritone) and Regulo Martinez-Anton (Pianist)

June 3, 2011 – Bowers Museum, 2002 N. Main St. Santa Ana, CA 92706

During the first 80 years of the 19th Century Mexico was in a constant turmoil, first fighting for national independence and once independence was won, alternating frequently between monarchical and democratically elected forms of government and many dictatorships in between while also fighting against invasions from Spain, the U.S., France and other European alliances. Then from 1880 through 1910 Mexico saw 30 years of relative stability under the Dictatorship of Don Porfirio Diaz. Even though there were enormous social and economic inequities during this period and prosperity was not uniform across all levels of Mexican society, the relative stability opened the door to a generation that produced and enjoyed a rich cultural life. Under these favorable cultural conditions Mexican composers finally had the opportunity to absorb the musical innovations of the European Romantic composers and fuse them with Mexico’s own ancestral musical traditions.. This art form flourished and Mexican composers produced a rich catalog of wonderful melodies and songs, many of which won international recognition. José Adán Pérez, baritone, and Régulo Martínez-Antón, pianist, will interpret for our enjoyment music from this period. Many of these melodies will be recognized by the audience but may not necessarily be recognized as uniquely Mexican. We invite you to enjoy the “Mexico’s music, before the Revolution of 1910″.
